Anthrax Leak of 1979
On April 2, 1979, there was an unusual anthrax outbreak
which affected 94 people and killed at least 64 of them in the Soviet city of Sverdlovsk
(now called Ekaterinburg), roughly 850 miles east of Moscow. The first victim died after
four days; the last one died six weeks later.

The Department of Defense is implementing a vaccination program, against the
biological warfare agent anthrax, which will be administered to all active duty and
reserve personnel.

"Eventually the total active duty and reserve component force, plus civilians

military personnel, including more than 1 million members of the National Guard and
