MEDICAL ALERT April 5, 1999
!!! Wabbit Alert...Wabbit Alert !!!
From time to time Medical Corps comes across certain rumors (i.e. Alerts!) which can pose a risk to the
unwary. While these "alerts" do not withstand investigation, some seem to have a
life of their own and we at Medical Corps have listed them under their own heading.
1) Sea Salt cannot be used as a Thyroid Blocker. Although Sea Salt can be good for you,
it only contains about 3 milligrams of Iodine per Kilogram of salt. This would mean that a
person would have to consume about 60 pounds of Sea Salt per day to block the thyroid.
2) Yogurt cannot be used to treat Anthrax. Well...we guess you could actually
"try" to use Yogurt to treat Anthrax, but your patient will die and you will
have wasted some spiffy Yogurt.
3) Cats are not, "The Other White Meat"------Politicians are.
4) Corpsmen can't really walk on water. (Unless it's winter and in Minnesota)

- THE ANTIBIOTIC INDUCED "CARRIER" STATE
- ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT INFECTIONS
- QUARANTINE -RECOMMENDATIONS
All Concerned:
Due to widespread self-medication with antibiotics and more importantly the dose charts
and dosage instructions contained in the three (perhaps four) known books by Larry Wayne
Harris i.e. Bacteriological Warfare, the following concerns have surfaced:
Each Terramycin "dose" chart in Harris' third book is followed by
instructions informing the reader of Harris' recommended dosage(s)--duration and
frequency. Below are excerpts from his book:
"(1) ONCE, BEFORE YOU ENTER AN AREA WHERE YOU ARE AT A HEIGHTENED RISK OF EXPOSURE
TO THE ABOVE MICROBES, AND ONCE AFTER YOU HAVE LEFT THAT AREA, IF LESS THAN 16
HOURS."
Comment from Medical Corps on the above statement by Harris:
The above "Dosage" offers no known protection in a high-risk area.
"(2) IF YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO THE ABOVE MICROBES: TWICE DAILY FOR TEN DAYS FOR
PLAGUE, CHOLERA, AND TYPHOID FEVER. TWICE DAILY FOR TEN DAYS FOR ANTHRAX, THEN 1/2
INDICATED DOSAGE FOR AN ADDITIONAL 20 DAYS, THEN 1/4 OF INDICATED DOSAGE FOR 30 MORE
DAYS."
Comment from Medical Corps on the above statement by Harris:
1) The above Harris "dosages" are under-dosages (too small and not long
enough) for any long-term prophylaxis (prevention of symptoms) and because of their
decreasing dosage nature can induce a suppression of symptoms or a temporary "carrier
state". What this means is that the beginning dosages in Harris' instructions,
although an under-dose, can temporarily suppress all symptoms in an infected human.
Because of this "suppression" the human will appear quite healthy and indeed be
free of symptoms for perhaps several weeks. This allows the "suppressed" or
"carrier" human access to the unaffected and uninfected population. When the
decreasing dosages can no longer contain the germination cycle of the spores, the disease
will manifest symptoms. This would naturally mean that an otherwise healthy population or
survival group would now have disease in their midst.
2) Not only can under-dosing create a "suppression" or false "carrier
state", but under-dosing can and will create antibiotic resistant infections. This
could very well mean that any disease passed on from said infected human to a healthy
human might resist all attempts at treatment.
QUARANTINE RECOMMENDATIONS:
- In any survival situation following an epidemic or mass casualty biological strike,
Medical Corps
highly recommends that all groups implement rigid quarantine procedures for any and all
humans suspected of underdosing.
- Quarantine should last at least 30 days.
