What In The World Was The NRC Thinking When They Only Made Plans For A 5-Mile Zone Around A Nuclear Power Plant - And What Is The Government Pill Program?

There is a mountain of medical evidence pointing to the need for thyroid blockers in every 100-mile zone around a nuclear power plant. New evidence points to the risk from radiation at a much longer range:

"A catastrophic meltdown in the spent fuel pool of a nuclear power plant could cause fatal, radiation-induced cancer in thousands of people as far as 500 miles from the site," according to a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission study, November 10, 2002.

It is quite evident from reading the accounts of the nuclear power plant accident at Chernobyl, that the children of Chernobyl and Belarus are practically a dead generation, most are diseased from exposure to nuclear fallout and without hope. This is no admonishment to the people or parents or even the government of that country, but to focus on the results of the tragic accident that brought them to this point - the deadly explosion of a nuclear power plant that released 100 times more radioactive fallout than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. 

At the time, no one guessed that the tons of radioactive fallout would travel so far. Most of it (70%) was dumped on Belarus. If the government or parents had stocked KIO3 and had given them to the children when it was apparent that the nuclear plant had exploded, then Belarus, which was further away from Chernobyl, could have prevented the epidemic of radiation-induced thyroid cancer its children now face.

This brings us to the subject of  -"What do you do?"

You hear news and see  articles about the government anti-radiation pill programs and some of the states taking action to stock the pills. This only tells you that the threat is real, and the pills are important. What I want to tell you is about the government pill program - then "what you should do" and why. 

Government Pill Program- 

There are only fourteen states (at the time of this writing) that have adopted the government free pill program. I'll not bother you with naming them because it is changing as more states consider it and other states refuse it. Here are the main issues:

• The free pills are KI and are adult doses only. 
• The manufacturer claims that you can use their pill for children, but the instructions for doing so are daunting. 
• The free pill program only issues 1 dose for every adult in the household. (Some states are changing that)
• The free pills are only for those within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ).
• You must fill out a justification form for the pills, and sign the form for a release of liability. 

The issues of KI distribution are disturbing: 5% or more of anyone who takes KI cannot keep it down. There are reports that the percentage of children that cannot keep it down is much more. This is because of the bitterness of the drug. If you cannot keep the drug in your system, it won't work. And right when you need it.

The biggest and most alarming problem is that of not being able to easily dose children. The instructions for dosing children are confusing and seems like an afterthought. 

The easiest way to illustrate this is with a short scenario:

Now just for a moment, I want you to imagine a nuclear power plant disaster scenario: 

What you need to know is -

1. The government-sponsored pill is not for children. Even with the power on or a generator running to provide light, it is still a big problem that the pill is not for children, and the children's dose is impossible to simply cut from the pill. (You also need to be aware that you may give a loading dose of one whole pill to a child, but you still face the issue of the child not being able to keep the drug down.) 
2. The little girl in the above story is 2 years old, this means she needs a 1/4 tablet dose. You would be faced with trying to grind up the pill every time and mixing it with a treat for the dose. (That is IF you have the extra pills)
3. The dose that the folks have in the above example would be ok in an evacuation, if the evacuation only lasted 1 day. Do you think that where you live, it would be a one-day evacuation - so the 24 hour one-pill- dose would last? (Chicago, New York City, Boston, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and other large cities near nuclear facilities- the answer is NO)
4. If you are directed by officials to evacuate - YOU MUST EVACUATE. I cannot stress this enough. KIO3 or KI will only protect you against ONE OF the most abundant forms of radiation, but not the rest! The closer you are to the nuclear plant, the more likely it is you will have to evacuate because of the other forms of radiation.
5. One pill per adult is not enough. Even if you are evacuating, you need a safety margin - especially for your children. Medical Corps, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the FDA all recommend a 14-day supply per family member minimum supply. 
6. Radioactive Iodine 131 is dangerous in the environment for 1 month. A 1-month supply for all members of the household is the best amount.
7. If you drive through a nuclear power plant 5-mile zone (the NRC calls it the "Peak Fatality Zone"), you should have an emergency supply in your glove compartment.

I can also tell you a couple of things that do NOT work. In fact, these very points are "claimed to really work!" in various chat rooms and other web pages.

These can be fatal if you ignore these warnings:

• Kelp - it won't help. You would have to eat about 5 pounds a day of kelp in order to saturate the thyroid. You won't make it.
• Sea Salt - Nope. You would have to eat 72 pounds of it (per day).
• Iodine (for cuts), iodine tablets (widely sold for water purification), tincture of iodine, or Povidone-iodine solutions - NO - they are poisonous if taken internally (ingested)!

This is NOT a hard decision to make. I am not asking you to buy hundreds of dollars of equipment, or selling you a worthless trinket. I am offering you several pieces of critical information for free and asking you to prepare yourself and your family with KIO3.
